Recently, national media has given considerable press to the concept that there is a link between periodontal disease and chronic illness.

With the help of my father Dr. Harvey Parrott I have read, studied and evaluated the most recent research linking gum infections to more feared and serious illnesses such as clogged arteries, heart attack, respiratory illness, kidney disease, diabetes, arthritis, pneumonia, birth complications and some cancers. We concluded it was imperative for our patients that we implement a more comprehensive means of diagnosing and treating gum disease.

In order to provide you with the best and most current methods and techniques to prevent and treat periodontal infections, my staff has attended several continuing education programs; then we combined the best of what we learned to create a systemic home and office gum treatment program.

At your next cleaning and/or dental exam, if you have any signs of periodontal disease, incipient, chronic, or rampant, the appropriate SMILE or SMILE Plus treatment plan will be presented to you. The severity of your gum infection will determine the number of appointments and what modalities are necessary to treat and control the resulting inflammation. With this new information and protocols it is encouraging that gum disease may be completely eradicated. Because of the national media hype, opportunistic lawyers have created a new source for lawsuits, untreated or undiagnosed periodontitis. If you choose not to proceed with the recommended treatment, you will be asked to sign a waiver.
